The Premier League table since Tottenham hired Antonio Conte
Antonio Conte has been sacked by Tottenham, leaving us wondering just how he’s fared in comparison to his rivals since arriving at the club.
Having rejected the Spurs job in the summer of 2021, Conte eventually arrived in November after the sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo.
Spurs were ninth in the league at the time, but Conte turned things around, leading Tottenham to a fourth-place finish and Champions League qualification.
The Italian then managed to convince Daniel Levy to back him with significant funds in the transfer window, stirring hopes that they can perform even better this season.
Rodrigo Bentancur and Dujan Kulusevski arrived during the January window and were crucial in securing a place at European football’s top table.
And in the summer, Conte added Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Clement Lenglet, Djed Spence, Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster to the ranks.
Spurs had started the 2022-23 season well as they won four of their first seven league matches. However, since losing the North London derby in October, they have had an inconsistent run of results.
Conte didn’t hold back after his side had thrown away a lead to draw 3-3 with Southampton. His dramatic outburst left his position untenable and he was fired during the international break.
“We are 11 players that go into the pitch. I see selfish players, I see players that don’t want to help each other and don’t put their heart [in],” Conte told Sky Sports.
“Because they are used to it here, they are used to it. They don’t play for something important, yeah. They don’t want to play under pressure, they don’t want to play under stress. It is easy in this way. Tottenham’s story is this.
“Twenty years there is the owner and they never won something but why? The fault is only for the club, or for every manager that stay here.
“You risk to disrupt the figure of the manager and to protect the other situation in every moment.
“Until now I try to hide the situation but now, no, because I repeat, I don’t want to see what I have seen today because this is unacceptable and also unacceptable for the fans.
“They follow us, pay for their ticket and to see the team another time, to have this type of performance is unacceptable. We have to think a lot about this.”
